Arnout met her in 1944 at General Patton's headquarters. In 2025, Arnout met the son of the director of the film that made Dietrich a world star and Dietrich's grandson, who was researching his grandmother's wartime past. Together with General Patton's granddaughter, Arnout traveled to Bastogne and, in Berlin, met Marlene's friends, the Nazi hunters Serge and Beate Klarsfeld. Their long letters were preserved.
